My first reaction was the same as yours: sounds like another enterprise buzzword that doesn’t apply to me.

I kept reading anyway. And I changed my mind.

Here’s the honest take on what Platform Engineering actually is, why it’s genuinely exploding right now, and — most importantly — what a solo developer or small team can actually borrow from it without becoming a Fortune 500 IT department.

What Platform Engineering Actually Is

Let’s start with a precise definition, because the term gets used loosely.

Platform Engineering is the practice of building and maintaining an Internal Developer Platform (IDP) — a self-service layer that sits between your developers and your infrastructure complexity.

The key word is self-service. A good IDP means a developer can provision a new environment, deploy a feature, set up observability, or spin up a database without filing a ticket, waiting for the ops team, or consulting a 40-page wiki. The platform absorbs the complexity; the developer gets a clean interface.

DevOps (the movement from the last decade) was about removing the wall between development and operations — getting both sides to collaborate more closely. Platform Engineering is a different answer to the same problem: instead of everyone collaborating on ops work, you build a dedicated team (or toolset) whose job is to make that ops work invisible to everyone else.

The analogy that clicked for me: DevOps is like teaching everyone in the office to make their own coffee. Platform Engineering is like installing a good espresso machine — you still need someone to maintain it, but everyone else just pushes a button.

The pain point: as teams grow, infrastructure becomes a bottleneck. Developers spend 20–30% of their time on ops tasks — provisioning, configuring, debugging deployment pipelines — instead of building features. The IDP is the answer.

The Indie Hacker Translation

Here’s where I want to be honest with you, because most of what you’ll read on dev.to is written for people at companies with dedicated DevOps teams.

You didn’t build it from scratch. You stitched it together from managed services. But the architecture is the same as what enterprise Platform Engineering teams are trying to build — they’re just doing it for 200 developers instead of one.

What You Can Actually Borrow

Platform Engineering has a few specific ideas that are worth stealing directly for your solo or small-team setup.

1. The “Golden Path” Concept

Enterprise IDPs define a Golden Path — a blessed, well-maintained set of tools and workflows that the platform team supports. Everything else is on you.

As an indie hacker, this is powerful. Most productivity problems I see in solo dev workflows come from too many choices. New project — do I use Prisma or Drizzle? Do I deploy on Railway or Fly.io? Do I use tRPC or just REST?

Defining your own Golden Path means: pick your stack, commit to it, stop re-evaluating every six months. New project? Astro + Supabase + Cloudflare + Railway. Done. That’s the path. Decisions made in advance are decisions that don’t cost you energy on the day you want to ship.

2. Developer Portals (Your Single Pane of Glass)

Enterprise IDPs typically include a developer portal — one place to see all your services, their status, their docs, and their deployment state.

For indie hackers: Linear + a personal dashboard can do this. I use Linear for everything project-related (feature backlog, bug queue, release notes), and I’ve set up a simple status page via Better Uptime for my deployed services. One URL, full picture. It sounds small but it materially reduces the cognitive overhead of managing multiple side projects.

3. Self-Service Environments

Big Platform Engineering teams build self-service staging environments — click a button, get a fresh environment that matches production.

You can approximate this with branch deployments on Railway or preview deployments on Vercel. If you’re not using branch previews yet: start. The ability to share a URL with a beta tester or a prospective user — a URL that runs your latest branch, isolated from production — is a significant workflow upgrade that costs you nothing with the right setup.

4. Observability as a First-Class Citizen

Platform Engineering teams build observability into the platform itself, not as an afterthought. Every service emits structured logs, metrics, and traces. The platform surfaces them automatically.

For indie hackers: Sentry + Axiom or Logtail can give you 80% of this at a fraction of the cost and complexity. The key principle to borrow is: set this up before you have users, not after something breaks. It’s dramatically cheaper to add observability to a greenfield project than to retrofit it under production pressure.

What You Can Safely Ignore

Now for the other side, because not everything in the Platform Engineering discourse is for you.

Kubernetes-based IDPs: Most enterprise Platform Engineering setups run on Kubernetes (K8s), with tools like Backstage, Crossplane, and Argo handling the platform layer. This is sophisticated, powerful, and completely overkill for a team smaller than ~20 engineers. If you’re a solo dev who is excited about Kubernetes: that’s fine, but do it because you enjoy it, not because Platform Engineering tells you to.

Internal Developer Portals (the software): Spotify’s Backstage is the most popular open-source portal for large enterprise IDPs. It’s a genuinely impressive piece of software, and also one that requires meaningful engineering investment to maintain. Skip it. Your project management tool + a simple dashboard covers the same need at your scale.

Platform team structures: A lot of Platform Engineering content is about how to organize a team — platform team vs. stream-aligned teams, etc. (This is from the Team Topologies book, which is great if you’re thinking about org design at 50+ people.) You don’t have a team. You have yourself and maybe two friends. The organizational theory doesn’t translate.

The Honest Takeaway

Platform Engineering is a real trend solving a real problem — but the problem it’s solving at scale is one you’ve already partially solved by choosing good managed services.

The parts worth borrowing are the mindset and the specific practices:

  1. Define your Golden Path and stop relitigating stack decisions with each new project.
  2. Set up a single source of truth for your project state (Linear + a status page is fine).
  3. Use branch previews — they’re already available, most people don’t use them.
  4. Add observability before you need it, not after something breaks.

The parts worth ignoring are the enterprise-scale tooling, the org design theory, and the Kubernetes-heavy implementation guides.

Platform Engineering, stripped of the enterprise overhead, is really just: abstract your complexity so you can focus on what you’re actually building. That’s good advice for anyone shipping software in 2026 — whether you have 200 engineers or just you.
